What I Didn't Do on My Summer Vacation
Summer is here, the pastures are green for the time being and the horses are getting really fat. Fat because I can't ride!
While riding with friends before Memorial Day, I had a minor wreck. I was on Handsome Hank, and my good friend was riding her 3 yr old filly. The filly took off bucking and while my friend stuck with the filly for three or four good jumps, my friend hit the ground pretty hard. I got off of Hank to see how she was and the filly took off down the lane, bucking and squealing. My friend got the air knocked out of her and cracked some ribs. As I looked up, the filly was running back towards me. Hank turned in front of me, which blocked the filly from running over me, but I got spun around and knocked to the ground. I thought Hank was going to step on me but I just got twisted around. When I tried to get up, I noticed my foot was pointing in the wrong direction. I kept trying to get up, but no luck. My foot was broken.
By the time the horses were unsaddled and put up, I really had the whir-lies and was sick to my stomach. So off to the emergency room we went! The xrays showed a very bad and unusual break to the bone that holds the foot to the leg. I was admitted and in surgery within 3 hours! The orthopedic surgeon told me this is the same break that race car drivers get when they hit a wall at a high rate of speed. Hmm, and all I was doing was standing on the ground..
Anyway, I am not riding for a couple more weeks. My friends have rallied around me, taking care of all the critter chores and driving Miss Daisy everywhere. Boy, I am not used to just sitting around. My garden looks like a jungle, my colts aren't getting handled, I'm not riding or roping this summer. Its not much fun. but Hank likes being turned out in the pasture and being lazy. Hope your summer is better!
